Kings Physics - Class of '67

Andrew Ennis

A recent pictures of Andrew at the Alumni day 2014.

Andrew popped in to see me when he was up in Kings Lynn. I thought that he was working for the Atomic Energy Inspectorate (of something like that) and was measuring radiation levels (Radon?) in the area.

His career resume is given below but I can't spot anything that would require a visit to Kings Lynn, which (as far as I am aware) has little to do with the MoD, so must have been with his 'safety' hat on after retirement.

Career

After leaving King's I worked for a year with GEC in Manchester, but then decided I was more interested in medical physics than heavy electrical engineering. So I joined the physics dept at University College Hospital, and at the same time did an MSc in Radiation Physics jointly run by Middlesex and Bart's hospitals.

Rosyth Dockyard from the air

After three years I changed jobs again, answering an MoD ad. for health physicists to work on nuclear submarines at Chatham Dockyard, which would have been a fairly easy commute. As soon as I was in their clutches the MoD posted me to Rosyth Dockyard, four hundred miles to the North. Around the same time I married Rosemary (ex-Bedford College; met through Operation Match!) Stayed at Rosyth for three years, then moved to Chatham. Stayed at Chatham Dockyard until 1983, when it was closed down - the Admiralty finally decided Henry VIII had built it in the wrong place, not anticipating the requirements of nuclear submarines.

The MoD then moved me to sit behind a desk at the Navy HQ in Bath, until 1996 when they moved me to another desk in Bristol. My final six years with the MoD were with the department that goes round to the various MoD nuclear sites telling them that they're doing their job all wrong.

Recent Events

I retired in 2005, but carried on with some part time work on nuclear safety, and some teaching. Now my main activity seems to be DiY in my four daughters' houses. I run in the Bristol or Bath half-marathons most years, achieving my personal worst on almost each occasion.

Attended the Mad Hatter Tea Party in 2014 - See the event pictures

This folder contains a picture of him and his wife Rosemary surrounded by their family.

Now living near Bath with his wife Rosemary. We are awaiting his own, much fuller, write-up.
